Commercial Printing - Sheet Fed Vs Web Printing
This means that the paper enters the press as a cut sheet of stock. There are many standard sizes of paper sheets ranging from 8½ "x 11" all the way up to 28" x 40". Likewise, there are many different sizes of printing presses, all suited to different types of commercial printing work. Most printing companies have several presses of different sizes able to satisfy the needs of many clients. There are even larger sheets available for 52" or 60" presses, but these machines are rare and paper distribution companies usually do not hold these sheets in inventory.
Web printing machines run paper that is still in roll form. The word "web" refers to the long strip of paper that runs through the entire press before it is sheeted at the end of the line of printing and coating towers. There are 2 main advantages to web printing. First, paper costs approximately 40% less when it comes on rolls and second, it prints both sides of the sheet in the same pass. However, web presses are huge and very expensive. They are only cost-effective when running a large number of multi-page books, or jobs with very high volume.
In reality, there is no competition between sheet fed and web printing applications. A knowledgeable, commercial printing sales person would know at a glance if a specific job would be better suited to one or the other. Even in a case where the size of the run might be acceptable to both (the high-end for sheet fed and the low-end for web), the sheet fed should win out because turn around time is much faster. They are used to higher order volumes and quicker production schedules. A well-run sheet fed organization can put out a fairly large order in one week, from reception of electronic art files to finished bindery and in boxes. Web companies, because the runs are so large, have to schedule orders weeks in advance. They have to order large amounts of paper and need time to get it in. Sheet fed companies, however, can order 90% of the products that they generally use in the afternoon on one day, and have it delivered the following morning.
There are those who say that sheet fed quality is superior to web, but that simply is not true. What is true is that there are papers available for web, that are lower in quality than the usual stocks used in sheet fed jobs. This is because the cost of paper on very large web runs is the largest component of the order, so there is a lot of pressure to have less expensive papers. Sheet fed orders tend to use less stock, so the cost differential in using a higher quality sheet is minimal. On web you can have the same stocks used in sheet fed (e.g. 200m gloss coated text) if requested.
As for the print quality, that is more a question of the intended quality of the machine. In both sheet fed and web equipment there are your Cadillac and Volkswagen equivalents. The age of the machine and how it was maintained will also play a role in the quality of the finished printed item.
When deciding which printing company to work with, remember that a print broker is a good idea because they know the ins and outs of all the printing issues and will not try to sell you a printing job based on the equipment they have.
