Hi. I waqs just wondering if I can put Formica on an old huge wood desk?
I just bought this wooden conference desk that is in it's original condition, which is excellent with just minor fading. However, I bought it to use it as a craft table for rubber stamping and scrapbooking workshops. The room is lavender with white trim and all my other furniture in the room is a bright white. I've been told I am crazy for wanting to refinish this piece but I did not buy it for an heirloom, I bought it to serve a purpose and I am a real matchy-matchy type of person....... Can someone help me out with this? I would like to know if I can cover the desk with Formica laminate? I know that this is what they use on countertops and this tends to hold up forever. Yes, you can adhere Formica (laminate) to the top of the desk. You can order a piece after looking through the samples of laminate at your local home center store. You are shopping for the flexible sheet of laminate and not the pre-formed counter top. When you order, bring along the dimensions so that you order a piece large enough to cover the top with a bit extra all around. The desk top must be smooth and flat and sanded and ready for the laminate installation.
The Formica is adhered with a contact type cement and you can easily find the installation instructions online. You will need to trim the laminate with a router with a laminate bit to clean the edges. If you pay attention to proper preparation and have the right tools on hand (you can rent them) you can complete this project yourself.
