Why has nickel finish gone out of style on handguns?
Back in the day before Stainless Steel, you could get many handguns with a nickel plate finish. I have one I bought just as Stainless was catching on. It still looks as good as the day I bought it 20 years ago.
you answered the question: because Stainless steel became available. With nickel plating, as with any plating, it has pros and cons. I like the look of nickel myself, but get a deep scratch in it, and let some cleaner etc get into it, and it starts lifting the plating off. Also, plating a firearm takes a lot more work, because you have to adjust tolerances to allow for the thickness of the plating. As well as going thru the plating process. Stainless is more durable, requires less special care, and is easier to manufacture and work with. I still have some older revolvers in nickel, I enjoy them, but I am very careful to preserve them.
