Self-Sticking Tile Installation Made Easy
Home renovations do not have to involve large, expensive make over's. A simple change of floor coverings can improve the look and feel of an older home. With hundreds of patterns to choose from, self-sticking tiles are an easy option. You just have to develop a few guidelines, make the necessary prep work and make a trip to home supply store, and a new floor can be yours in a day or two.
To begin you must remove old floor coverings, be sure to sand down any rough areas, and remove old adhesives. If applying over existing wood floors remove old wax buildup and tap down any exposed nail heads. Once prep work is finished, you can calculate for new tiles.
Using a calculator, multiply length time's width of the room, this will provide the square footage you need. Add an additional ten to fifteen percent, for cutting waste. The variance depends upon your skill as a tile layer. Self-sticking tiles come in cases of twenty tiles for the 12 x 12 size, which covers an area of about 80 square feet. The box will have a square-foot coverage posted on the label, simply divide your total by this number, this will get you total number of boxes needed. If you are using an intricate design pattern, better buy an additional box or two, matching the pattern may prove difficult on large floor surfaces.
Once back home, arrange your first row of tiles along your chalk line (Do not remove paper backing just yet), beginning in the center of the floor. When you reach the wall, if the tile does not join up correctly, make a line on the tile for the difference. Using scissors trim the tile. Do this all the way around the room, before beginning the actual placing of tiles. For areas around pipes and cabinets, use paper to make a drawing, and trace onto tiles cut out the notches you need.
Once you are ready, your pattern laid out, and all cuts made, you can start the process of laying the tile. Simply peel the backing off the first tile, center on your beginning point, and press firmly. Do not try to slide tiles; lay tiles with edges touching and simply press them in place. Once you finish you will have a beautiful new floor for little money. Do not wash your floor for the first week, this allows the mastic to set up firmly.

Is there anything you can paint self-stick tiles with to seal/waterproof them?
I know self-stick tiles weren't the best choice. But I re-did my kitchen floor with them, priming the floor first and using extra adhesive. I really want to make sure I don't have any problems with water getting between the tiles and such, is there any product that I can paint over the whole floor with which will waterproof and/or seal the floor?

Yes there are sealers you can buy. check with your local hardware store. I think ACE carries some.
