What do i do with my picky eater yorkie (5 months)?
I'm feeding him Natural Balance Ultra Premium (small bites). He's doing well on it but ever since i started giving him frozen wet food on his KONG when i'm not home, he refuses to eat his dry food.
So i tried by buying Natural Balance meet rolls and mixing it with the dry food. He eats the meet and some dry food but not all of it!!!
WHAT SHOULD I DO??? Is Natural Balance not tasty enough for him?
His "tastes" shouldn't matter. Dogs don't eat because it tastes good, they eat as a means of survival, plain and simple. Make a quick trip to your vet to rule out any medical problems.
If the dog comes back healthy, then you have nothing to really worry about. A dog that's healthy, and is a picky eater, is that way because it's ALLOWED to be that way. Pick a kibble, stick with it, get the dog on a scheduled feeding, and stick to it. Eliminate treats, snacks, etc... until you get things back on track. When you leave, fill his KONG with his kibble, and nothing else. Two smaller meals should be sufficient for him. Take however much he eats, give him half of that in the morning, half later in the afternoon. Leave the food down for 10-15 minutes tops, then immediately remove the food from his access. Until things get back on track, he gets no treats, no table scraps, no nothing but his regular kibble. Eventually, he will learn that YOU are the provider of the food, and he eats what you give him, when you give it to him.
Do NOT switch kibbles because he stopped eating. This will ONLY nurture the problem. Unless there's a medical issue behind it (such as stomach or dental issues), he's not going to starve himself, and will eventually eat when he gets hungry enough, and when he realizes that you're not going to give into him. Be firm and stand your ground, remember that YOU are in charge, NOT him, and that's how HE needs to see things as well.
