Government Boots by The Mighty Gabby (with lyrics)

Government Boots was and still is a popular calypso song created by the well known Barbadian singer, the Mighty Gabby in 1984. The Mighty Gabby, aka Anthony Carter, was frustrated by the what, in his mind, was a total waste of tax payers' money. He could not fathom why a Government that had so many pressing issues and limited resources would be spending so much money on its army, especially when there weren't any major uprisings in Barbados. As with many calypso songs at that time, the music was used as an avenue to tell the nation their opinion on various topics that were happening on the island.

All of the lyrics to the song and a music video can be found at http://lyrics-of-barbados.webnode.com/products/government-boots/  . One of my favourite sections of the song is:

"Unemployment high and the treasury low

And he buying boots to cover soldier toe"

The song is known for this popular line or section:

"Left, right, left, right, In the Government boots, the Government boots"

The song even lashed out directly at the then Prime Minister, J. M. G M. Tom Adams and had been banned from being played on air for a while. (Wonder why?):

"Tell Tom I say, that wouldn't do

He got to see 'bout me and you

And most of all, all the children

And stop dem soldiers from marching"

Another section of the song which lashed out at the Prime Minister was:

"Well don't tell me, mash Tommy heals

He giving them four square meals

Some of them so fat, they could hardly run

But shooting bulls eyes with automatic gun

Wid all them boots, boots, boots and more boots"

Some other local favourites sung by The Mighty Gabby were Dr. Cassandra, Hit it, Emmerton, Jack, Culture, West Indian Politician and Riots In De Land. It might also be interesting to note that in 1968 the Mighty Gabby was the youngest person ever to win the coveted calypso crown in Barbados at the tender age nineteen (19) years. Due to his hard work in the development of the artform and his contributions to Barbadian music he became a cultural icon. He was eventually appointed The Cultural Envoy / Ambassador of Barbados.

About the Author

Why are Gang Members always so powerful (real gangsters, not wangsters)?

Why are they unable to get beaten? I am not talking about the punks.

They are so big/ strong/tough, bench press more than the ave guy and always have big muscles and know how to fight (can beat a martial artist in the street). You can stab them and they are unaffected.

Especially the Latino's and black guys. Even us regular 2-300 lb people who lift heavy weights, eat right and take self defense (mma, karate, boxing) aren't as "mighty" in a fight as they...

they are not. they are tough, but if you put a bullet in the right spot they'll just die like any mortal being. they grew up on the streets, grew up tough and strong, they've been shot and beaten before and learned not to cave to pain. the only way to deal with one is to excise the law. Legally (in the USA) possess a firearm and use it in self defense. Or call the cops and hide, hopefully they won't find you and beat your ass.
