The Secret That Sign Companies Don't Want You to Know About Your Real Estate Sign
Real estate signs are a big part of the sign industry. Even in times of difficult economic status, real estate signs have to be purchased in order to help advertise. And making decisions about your signs are not always easy. You don't always know what materials to choose or what type of sign will create the best impression. We are here to help try and clear up some of the questions.
How do I know what material to choose for my real estate sign?
The two most common materials for real estate signs are Coroplast and Aluminum. Coroplast is a corrugated plastic and Aluminum is, of course, the lightweight metal. There are also several other less popular choices. They include Masonite, polyethylene plastic, PVC plastic and Scooter board (a synthetic waterproof board).
The other materials we have listed have no greater product or economical advantage over the more common materials of aluminum and Coroplast. However that decision is still not necessarily an easy one. Some sign businesses have been pricing the aluminum and Coroplast signs in a way that gives a false impression of the value.
Are you getting a false impression in the value of your real estate sign?
There are sign companies who are selling the Coroplast signs for a very low price, and as a consequence the aluminum signs seem to be extremely expensive. However this is unfair to the consumer. Really, the cost difference between a Coroplast or aluminum sign is negligible. By making such a price difference they are devaluing the Coroplast sign and giving the perception that the aluminum metal signs are out of reach of a small business.
How can they they be similar in price if one is plastic and one is metal? The truth is that is the only variable in the price. The process to produce the coroplast real estate sign and the aluminum one is exactly the same, just as the amount of materials used is the same. There is also a relatively small price difference in the materials. Even with the economy as it is now aluminum has not raised significantly in price. Now that you know this you can start choosing which is the real value for your custom sign.
Choosing the real value for your real estate sign
When you are ordering a real estate sign there are a few factors that determine the value:
- A sign that promotes confidence in you and your abilities
- A sign that exudes professionalism
- Sign that has "staying power" giving clients a sense of security
Looking at the two materials individually will help make the qualities of both clear.
Coroplast - Corrugated plastic is a lot like plastic cardboard. Waterproof. Not wind resistant. Up close the corrugation can be seen on the sign faces. The corrugation also shows on the edges of the sign. The corrugated plastic is rated for two years outdoors. It has a lower price than aluminum.
Aluminum - Lightweight metal with baked on enamel coating. Waterproof. Rust resistant. Wind resistance depends on thickness chosen of aluminum. A super smooth finish as a base for professional looking metal real estate signs. Rated for 10 years outdoors.
As you can see from a side by side comparison, the true value is with the aluminum sign. For professionalism, life of the sign and the relative low cost, aluminum is the real estate sign we would recommend.

Where to get coroplast for a guinea pig cage in Overland Park, KS?
Can I go to a Michaels or Hobby Lobby? I dont know of any sign stores.
Try going to a gas station or other store. They get large signs for outside that are usually made of coroplast. They get them free and often toss them away when they are done with them. No hurt in asking. You will end up with a large piece of free coroplast and help the environment as well. Be sure to score the material so that the printing is on the outside. You can try those other stores, but I've only seen small ones the size used for election signs or yard sale signs.
